Seems a strange area in which to post this, but it fits the description, and there's nowhere better to put it! Just thought I'd mention this book, by Horatio Clare, which I read recently and enjoyed. It's more of a travel book than a natural history book, but if, like me, you like both then it may be of interest. The author is a birder and decides to go travelling, to 'follow' the swallows all the way from their wintering grounds in South Africa, heading north through several other African countries (including a few politically-unstable ones), across Spain and France and culminating in his home of South Wales. He discusses the history, politics and geography of each of the countries in turn, and there's a fair bit of information about the swallows themselves. He's a young guy (despite the name, which I think makes him sound ancient ) with a great sense of humour - as well as being informative, the book made me smile a lot. I think it's worth a read.
