I'm not really a new age bloke. I only moisturise after shaving with an electric razor, I avoid beautifying products (closing the stable door and all that!). A friend of mine recommended Skin So Soft as an insect repellent. After a night out watching Nightjar and getting eaten alive, despite using mossie rep, I thought I'd give anything a go. The stuff itself is cheap, cheaper than the usual specific stuff, about £2.50 for 150ml. It smells a little, well, perfumed, but I really can't recommend it highly enough. One application when out and while the blood suckers investigated me, endlessly, they didn't bite. One area they did bite though was, thanks to the midges, a newly discovered bald patch on top of my noggin! Some really good stuff, however you'll need to be have some very good fieldcraft skills if using it when looking for mammals. Avon Skin So Soft

I normally use DEET, but I'll give Avon a go!

I'm a hairy hunter me! Julie, the Skin So Soft won't dissolve anything plastic so always a bonus over DEET. Thylacine is there a meteor shower forecast for the 12th or is the astronomy a bit of an aside for times when the wildlife's not about?

Saw my first nightjars a few weeks ago. Really interesting, but bizarre birds - I think the term 'ethereal' is accurate. They almost sound like tropical frogs. Anyway, the midges were out in force and DEET was being sprayed here, there and everywhere. Think I'll be an Avon lady in future - it's probably marginally healthier than inhaling loads of DEET and, in any case, it's cheaper. At least I don't have to worry about smelling feminine!
