Dogs are pretty cool (sometimes) and an ex-girlfriend in Japan's Shetland Sheepdog (I could have swore it was a Collie!) named "Taku" was fun. When it wasn't angry with me anyway!
I must say though I do have a special fondness for cats. So much so, I'll often give a friendly neighbourhood cat a non-violent 'headbutt' if I'm not in a rush to be anywhere (I'll get down to its level, NOT the other way round).
As a child I had a sweet tortoiseshell that my younger sister named "Topsy" from the Topsy and Tim books we were both reading at that age. That cat begat "Shirley" - the one we couldn't give away - named by my father after Shirley Bassey. Yes, she was a black cat.
In the early days, I have great memories of them being extremely affectionate. That is, when I wasn't trying to train them to walk on just their front two paws (against their will, of course). The best part though was how they used to have a "mad half hour" every evening. They'd chase each other around, with Shirley more often than not being first to the top of the curtains. They were great, though now they've met their maker, sadly.
A sister has a sweet black & white cat that was a rescue cat with the tip of its tail missing. For this Tom, that doesn't seem to do much, she gave the rather bizarre cat name of Malachey (as in the boy's name). Her slightly deaf neighbour can't help but mispronounce it "Malarkey" (a significant improvement imho). My preference is "Malaka" (it's a Greek thing).
Any good pet stories, anyone? They're like part of the family, after all!
