I thought others might like to see this on iPlayer whilst they have the chance: Link
This was a great documentary (narrated by David Attenborough, no less) featuring first time, fantastic footage of the elusive giant squid. It's definitely worth watching.

Best pop next door with my laptop to watch it (to circumvent the TV licensing issue!). Practically the first thing I bought the day I moved to Athens back in '96 was a tin of squid (emergency rationing - Greek style! ). It was one of the last things I ate, the contents of that tin. I do like squid and octopus (ate tonnes of the stuff in Japan). My first near-fatal case of food poisoning was at the tentacles of octopus though! Even got a reduced-to-clear octopus a few months ago (on a protein mission to Morrisons). Should have been something like a tenner iirc. I got it for something like 15p! But I digress... Giant squid and the Humboldts and the colossals do fascinate me, I must say. Scary beasts of the depths that hopefully stay down deep when I'm in the sea!

I watched it on the iplayer last night and really enjoyed it - was really pleased for the folks involved when they got their images, they were so happy!
Was really interested to see just how much suction power there was in the severed arm that they drew onboard.
I have to admit to being slightly disappointed in the size of 'Giant' squid though - I wanted something Kraken sized! I think its a bit of a cheat counting the length of their two long tentacles.
I have tried squid and octupus but have to say I wasn't very impressed. I'm not big into any seafood really, which is a bugger living in Scotland.

Sadly I missed this. Was it any good. I agree thet the Giant squid appears not to be as impressive as myth would have us believe.

I don't like seafood either, cabbage! The squid wasn't as gigantic as I expected but nevertheless I enjoyed the programme. Initially they got some footage (mainly of the tentacles) by attracting the squid using artificial luminescence (to mimic panicking jellyfish, its prey). The researchers then went underwater in a submersible, and lured the squid in to film using diamond squid as bait. They got plenty of decent footage of it feeding. It was really bizarre, it shimmered a golden colour. Not what I expected.
