Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo have managed to capture rare footage of their female southern cassowary laying an egg after surveillance cameras were placed in the birds’ nesting site when they started to show promising breeding behaviour. www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/news-and-events/news/articles/news_310.html(Whoa, that's a lot of posts! I'm done for tonight! )

They're actually very menacing creatures, more than once I've been looking for them in their enclosure only to catch sight of one watching me from the undergrowth as though its hunting me. They've got a very reptillian look about them, they remind me of Velociraptors more than anything else (the Steven Speilberg version of velociraptors anyway!) I like them :-)

I once went on a guided tour to look for them in Queensland, although what we would have done if we'd encountered one, I don't know - to say they're feisty is to put it mildly! Yes, they do look rather reptilian. I don't think I've ever encountered one outside of Australian zoos before.

They are one of the few birds documented as killing people. Fine by me. They're neat things - I've seen a one on my table but that was all thankfully.

Should I be offended by this?! I went on the tour nearly seven years ago and knew virtually nothing about them at the time. I'm not sure I'd go on one now.
