Blog entry hereVery cute little critters, grasshoppers. Must say, I've only really encountered them ONCE I think, on my A level biology field trip in Shrewsbury. Walking through a valley, it sounded like the hills were electrified, though there were no pylons in sight. Looking closer at the vegetation, there were LOADS of little grasshoppers. I even managed to catch one that jumped, in my hand (without crushing it ). It escaped when I opened my hand slightly to show another student. Not quite my favourite insect (that would have to be Japan's crazy cicadas - they're a right barrel of laughs, they are), but pretty cool, all the same. And these pink ones are all the more unusual for their colouration! Locusts were fun as a student too, making them flap their wings by directing a fan at them, but I'm always a bit unsure about these (I think they can cause a very serious allergic reaction or something nasty like that).

Blog entry hereThought I'd make sure we kept at least one of Vic's links and everyone knows of the delights of Madagascar, pretty much, so went with this. Very cute little critters, grasshoppers. Vics photos are amazing. There's a spot on one of my butterfly/bee transects that is swarming with grasshoppers and crickets at the right time of year, I've spent many a happy hour trying to photograph them - without much success!

I have to say I hate the sound of a cricket. They can be so LOUD.
Back when I was living in a Japan, I stayed in this "gaijin house" with around 30 other westerners at one point. The young son of the welsh landlord and his Japanese wife had a plastic tank with a few in. What a nightmare they were! I can't remember how I managed to sleep at night when he had them!
