www.wildlifetracking.org/?tag_id=129185Thought I'd resurrect a former thread from a former forum. The 2012 Satellite tags attached to basking sharks around the Western Isles all seem to be defunct but I know there's plans to try again in 2013. In the meantime we have this little fella "Finly" who was tagged by Manx Basking Shark Watch on June 3rd 2013. He now seems to be up round Arran (and according to the chart walked across land a fair portion of the way there which would have been exciting for anyone driving in the area). Hopefully the 2013 tags will be visible to the public again (and will be glued on better). I'll stick a link in here if one appears.

You'd have hoped the scientists in charge would be a bit more savvy next time. After all the Ozzies had their Great White Shark go to South Africa and back before the tag stopped working. Several months at least. I may be wrong (probably) but I would have thought a basking shark would be a bit more sedentary than a Gt White - they wouldn't breach after all. I still want to know what happens when the UK basking sharks meet the UK Orcas (transient types) - no, this is not American Football!

I think they're being too pessimistic - we want the tags to stay for a year - we really do... and I'd bet they do too but just can't say that publicly as then anything less is a failure. We want to know where baskers overwinter...and so do they....
